Located in the Pyrenees, a range of mountains in southwest Europe that forms a natural border between France and Spain, the road to the Pyrenees’ largest natural amphitheater is paved. Refuge accommodation is generally clean and comfortable, but basic with communal dormitories (either bunk beds – or shared sleeping platforms) and simple toilet and washing facilities. Accommodation: 7 nights in mountain refuges and trekkers’ lodges, with continental breakfasts, picnic lunches and generous evening meals provided every day. Personally I thought Troumouse was slightly better but maybe that's the walking legs talking. No facilitiesThis place, close to Gavarnie, provides similarly good views and great places to trek and yet, it is far less crowded than the Cirque du Gavarnie, perhaps because it seems slightly underdeveloped. It’s called D922. (Altitude : 1550 mètres). The Cirque de Troumouse is utterly and thrillingly different from its western counterparts in the Gavarnie area, a huge (10km across, apparently) theatre of cliffs and peaks surrounding rough, lake-studded ground with a raised rocky hill at its heart which commands tremendous views around the cirque. Its protected national park status is what has prevented the Tour de France from coming here - the park authorities are understandably concerned about the impact of all the fans and support that comes with the Tour going into an area of such outstanding beauty.
We did the loop as suggested; if we had to do it over again we would skip the return on the trail along the road (and opt for an in and out instead).Turn off your ad blocker to see a map of this trailCirque de Barroude: from the Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel to the Plan Héas.
