Please, what was the name of the tour company or hotel, so that others don't have the same bad experience?Most people enjoy the spice tour, so this doesn't sound normal.I've been to Jozani, and yes the monkeys are amazing.The fuller tour takes you deeper into the forest, but it may not be quite as unusual as the monkeys by the road.The office had a small sign on it which said Mr Mitu's Spice Tours, I remember because it was the same tour company listed as in the Lonely Planet guidebook I have. The guide talked while I'd say half a dozen young guys tagged along making everyone in the group little baskets to hold the various leaves and whatnot we were given, making us palm leaf "watches" and things like that. by Emily993. Turns out this was our lunch stop. And looking at the guidebook's map it could have been that company, the office wasn't far from our hotel (Bandari Lodge). Main goal is beach. more details on Spice tour and Jozani Forest is adviseable and I request you to book that at the hotel directly. The day started off decently enough, we went out to a spice farm and started a walk through the farm learning about the different trees and plants and spices. I run because I really like to eat, I don't turn down food). Turns out the building was some old baths. Thanks for being a part of the Tripadvisor travel community!I guess I'm going to be in the minority here but I did a spice tour and thought it was a total waste of time and money. And of course there just happens to be a lady with a spice stand and a guy selling oils.After a good hour in the village buying we were piled BACK in the van and driven to another village and told to get out. Then they went around to everyone begging for tips while the main guide spoke to them in Swahili and sounded really angry. You don't need to know a language to know when someone is being berated. Zanzibar Island. It's red and the young guys smeared it and did this whole pantomime that horrified me. Zanzibar is a destination for sunseekers and 'day excursions' are limited to other beaches and some historic sites.

Discuss Zanzibar Island travel with Tripadvisor travelers. We really had no idea why as there was nothing in this village. I really liked Zanzibar but save a day and skip the tour. No drinks were offered until after lunch was served and the food was horrible (and I am by no means a picky eater who turns down food. It wasn't far from our hotel so we just went for maybe 90 minutes - 2 hours, plenty of time to see the monkeys and the mangroves. For spices head to the local market where they are cheaper. At a pinch you could try a short hop to Saadani, 10 mins, and a game drive there … The guides stopped being nice once we left the spice farm, they were just nasty and mean for no good reason.
