The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or nearby; fees may apply. The room was spacious with 2 comfortable arm chairs, a good size balcony overlooking the pool and with a good view of the sea. Santa Cruz Beach and Madeira Botanical Garden are also within 6 mi (10 km).
Also we were lucky to be able to attend the Carnival ( which takes place each year the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday ) it was a riot of colour and music with 1000 participants taking 3 hours to cover the route along the promenade and well worth a look. It did at times feel a little like an old peoples care home. Birthday day certainly will be one to remember, the champage, the decorated table, the waiters singing and last but not least, the earthquake!!!. The Rui Palace Madeira is a good hotel for a relaxing break - we feel more suited to those wanting peace and quiet. From check in to departure everything was superb. Weather was generally pleasant but we noticed some days weather was cloudy at hotel but sunny in Funchal so worth venturing out on the free bus. Reis Magos Beach is minutes away.
We enjoyed our stay but don't think we would return mainly due to location and age of clientelle.

We would have liked an alternative al a carte option restaurant as the one they have didn't look greatly appealing and the menu seemed focused on meat eaters. We are looking forward to meet you again next year as you said! The food was delicious, i am a picky veggie and my husband a meat eater, but we didnt have any problems with getting full for every meal. There are two sittings for dinner 6 and 8pm, luckily we had the 8 pm sitting so we had time for a couple of pre dinner drinks, the food was brilliant with a fantastic choice, my partner is vegetarian and she was impressed by the selection of great food on offer, this was true for lunch and breakfast. With a good choice of food at all meals and some form of entertainment every evening from traditional folk dancing, magicians , musicians and vocalists.As mentioned there are 2 sittings for evening meals and on arrival we were given our sitting for 8pm - we had the opportunity to change this but felt that after the large breakfast and lunch this was a better time - it worked well as we did not feel rushed as you might with the earlier time and after we went straight on to the evening entertainment. 2 outdoor pools, 1 indoor pool and 1 children's pool, 3 of them heated in winter.

Madeira is a very hilly place with not a great deal of easy strolling walks, it has a tranquil feel about it and people are extremely friendly, but I would return there again if only to be treated to a relaxing wonderful hotel like the Riu Palace its simply luxurious.
